What’s happening in Leighton right now
Leighton is small, and the biggest news in town is downtown.
- Downtown Corridor Project. Leighton won a $1 million Transportation Alternatives Program grant to rework part of downtown, including a trail segment that will connect into the Singing River Trail, a greenway system of more than 200 miles. The groundbreaking was set for June 2025 during Sledgefest, got rained out, and was rescheduled for December 2025, ahead of the town’s annual Christmas parade. I haven’t found a published completion date, so ask me for the latest before you plan around it.
- Sledgefest. The town started Sledgefest in 2022 to honor Percy Sledge, who was born in Leighton. In 2023 it ran as its own festival with the stage set up in the middle of Main Street, food vendors, and fireworks to close the night.

Where Leighton sits
Leighton is in eastern Colbert County, southeast of Muscle Shoals, with U.S. 72 running just south of town and the Tennessee River a few miles north. Its ZIP code is 35646. It’s a small town, well under a thousand people at the 2020 census, and part of the Shoals, so Muscle Shoals, Sheffield and Tuscumbia shopping, jobs and services are a short drive west.
Leighton schools are part of Colbert County Schools: Leighton Elementary, Hatton Elementary, and Colbert County High School. School zones follow the address, so we check each home.

A crossroads town with deep roots
The first settlers came as early as 1813, and the place was first called Crossroads, where the road from the Tennessee River to Tuscaloosa met the road between Huntsville and Tuscumbia. It took the name Leighton after Rev. William Leigh, the first postmaster, in 1824. A railroad came through in 1833, Leighton became a cotton shipping center, and the town incorporated in 1890.
LaGrange College, founded nearby in 1830, was burned by Union troops during the Civil War. The site is now LaGrange College Site Park, a living history center. Several places around town are on the National Register of Historic Places, including the John Johnson House, Old Brick Presbyterian Church, and Preuit Oaks.
Music runs deep here too. Percy Sledge was born in Leighton, and in 2023 the Leighton Museum inside Bank Independent’s flagship branch held his signature blue coat along with items from musician Jimmy Hughes.

Town hall, the library and the park
Leighton runs on a mayor and council form of government, and Derick Silcox is mayor. The Leighton Public Library is at 8740 Main Street and reopened after a renovation in 2023. Fennell Park got new playground equipment around the same time.

What to ask before you buy here
Homes around Leighton range from in town lots to land out in the county. A few questions change the math:
- In town or out in the county? It changes which services you get and your property tax rate. Leighton’s town rate isn’t in my property tax guide yet, so we pull it for each address.
- City water and sewer, or septic? Out in the county, septic is common. If there’s a septic system, it belongs on the inspection list.
- Close to the river? Ask about flood zone status and insurance before you fall in love with a lot. Your insurance agent can quote it early.
- What’s the drive? Time the commute to where you work at the hour you’d actually leave.
Buying your first home here
You don’t need a finished wish list to call me. Start with a lender so you know your number. It takes about a day, and sellers generally won’t look seriously at an offer without it. You’re free to use any lender you want, and I can give you several local names.
Some of the area around Leighton may qualify for USDA financing, which often needs no down payment. Eligibility depends on the exact address and your income, so we check each home against the USDA map and your lender confirms. Alabama’s AHFA programs can also help with a down payment. The full step by step is in my first time buyer guide.
When you’re ready
Send me the Leighton addresses you’re curious about and the questions you haven’t been able to get answered. That’s usually a better first conversation than a list of must haves.
I’m Corey Bonds, a licensed Alabama real estate salesperson with MarMac Real Estate - The Shoals. I text back the same day, and there’s no pressure from me either way.
