What’s happening in Killen right now

Killen is small, about a thousand people, and it moves at a small town pace. The honest list of recent news is short.

  • Police department rebuilding. The town named Bill White police chief in January 2026. He said the department was running with three officers where it should have five, and laid out plans to fill those spots.
  • Town events. The farmer’s market ran at Killen Park from May through August 2026, and the Founder’s Day celebration was July 31 and August 1.

I looked for new commercial or industrial construction announced inside town limits and didn’t find anything from a source I’d put my name on. If that changes, this page changes.

Where Killen sits

Killen is in Lauderdale County on the north side of the Tennessee River, along Highway 72 east of Florence. Its ZIP code is 35645. It’s part of the Shoals, so Florence shopping, jobs and hospitals are a short drive west. The town calls itself the home of the Brooks Lions, and Brooks Elementary and Brooks High School, part of Lauderdale County Schools, are a big part of how people here organize their week.

The canal, the lake, and the outdoors

Killen grew up around river navigation. The town was first called Masonville and took the Killen name in 1896, after James Sharp Killen opened a store and post office. A canal with a set of locks once ran through this stretch of the river, and it went under water when Wilson Dam was finished in 1924. Today the Lock Six area gives you a boat ramp on Wilson Lake, and the lake is a big reason people look out this way.

Killen Park has a walking trail, an amphitheater, pavilions, tennis courts, and ball fields. Turtle Point Golf and Country Club is here too.

Town hall, the park and the library

Killen was incorporated in 1957. Lonnie Ray took office as mayor on November 3, 2025, the town’s 21st, with a five member council. Town Hall, Killen Park and the public library all share one address, 319 J.C. Mauldin Highway. Town Hall is open weekdays 8:00 to 4:30 at 256-757-1246.

Killen Park covers about 120 acres and was dedicated in 1976. It has a 1.5 mile walking trail, a 500 seat amphitheater, lighted tennis courts, pickleball, soccer and baseball fields, and pavilions you can rent. The Killen Public Library opened in 1985 and has more than 20,000 items, public computers and two genealogy computers. It’s open Tuesday through Friday 9 to 5 and Saturday 9 to 1, at 256-757-5471.

Getting around

Killen sits on U.S. 72 east of Florence. Approximate drives with no traffic: Florence about 17 minutes, Muscle Shoals about 24, and Huntsville about 80. The nearest hospital is North Alabama Medical Center at 1701 Veterans Drive in Florence.

ALDOT has been widening Florence Boulevard (U.S. 72) to six lanes between Indian Springs Drive and Sky Park Road, a $24 million project on the Florence end of the Killen commute. In mid October 2026, ALDOT’s project page still listed it as active, with completion projected for fall 2026, so check the current status before you plan around it.

On the water side, Wilson Lake covers about 15,500 acres with 166 miles of shoreline, per TVA. If you’re looking at a lake lot, read my lake home guide first. Your water provider depends on the address, since East Lauderdale Water serves much of the eastern county, so we confirm it for each home.

What to ask before you buy here

Homes around Killen range from in town lots to property out in the county, and some sit near the water. A few questions change the math:

  • In town or out in the county? It affects which services you get and who you call for them. We check each address.
  • City water and sewer, or septic? Out in the county, septic is common. If there’s a septic system, it belongs on the inspection list.
  • Near the lake? Ask about flood zone status and insurance before you fall in love with the view. Your insurance agent can quote it early.
  • What’s the drive? Time the commute to where you work in the Shoals at the hour you’d actually leave.

Buying your first home here

You don’t need a finished wish list to call me. Start with a lender so you know your number. It takes about a day, and sellers generally won’t look seriously at an offer without it. You’re free to use any lender you want, and I can give you several local names.

Some of the area around Killen may qualify for USDA financing, which often needs no down payment. Eligibility depends on the exact address and your income, so we check each home against the USDA map and your lender confirms. Alabama’s AHFA programs can also help with a down payment. The full step by step is in my first time buyer guide.

When you’re ready

Send me the Killen addresses you’re curious about and the questions you haven’t been able to get answered. That’s usually a better first conversation than a list of must-haves.

I’m Corey Bonds, a licensed Alabama real estate salesperson with MarMac Real Estate - The Shoals. I text back the same day, and there’s no pressure from me either way.
